  • About The Role

  • The Data Science Careers project is part of a wider programme of widening access and outreach activities for young people including summer schools, and university presentations. The project aims to increase awareness, understanding and connection to defence and security data science careers from groups previously underrepresented in these roles. The project will deliver a range of activities aimed at increasing the diversity of those taking up data science careers in the defence and security field. 

    We are seeking facilitators to join our team and support the delivery of our fourth year of widening access and outreach work. The role will join the Culture and Engagement Team under the People Directorate and be managed by the Widening Access and Outreach Officers. The role will involve working closely with our Defence and Security programme. The role is on a casual hour contract basis. 

     

    ROLE PURPOSE 
    Facilitators are required on a casual worker basis to support the delivery of The Turing Summer Experience for A level  or equivalent students and career talks for undergraduates. Facilitators will be knowledgeable in data science and/or AI related topics and able to talk with confidence on the subject. They will be able to present and lead engaging activities for an audience of A-level students and to deliver existing curriculum and presentations. Delivery takes place within universities and venues in Scotland, Wales and England.
     

    The Turing Summer Experience
    Facilitators will both deliver and support delivery of a broad curriculum as well as acting as pastoral support throughout each week. The curriculum covers topics relating to careers as well as data science & AI relevant tools such as GitHub. Facilitators are also asked to co-deliver a pre-existing data challenge based on Cryptology, Computer Vision or Language Modelling, so skills in one of these areas will be valuable

    We are running events on the following dates and to apply you should be available for at least one or more of the weeks (Monday-Friday). Reasonable travel and accommodation expenses will be covered and can be discussed at interview. The 2026 Summer Experience events will run on:

    • Manchester: 3 - 7 August 2026
    • Birmingham: 10–14 August 2026
    • London: 17–21 August 2026 

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT 

  • Gain an understanding of the pre-existing curriculum, such as data science-based challenges for young people undertaking The Turing Summer Experience 2026. And Undergraduate career talks. 
  • Lead delivery to undergraduate and A level audiences on pre-existing material, in an engaging manner. 
  • Attend training and follow safeguarding expectations as set by the Turing to ensure the safety and wellbeing of participants.  
  • Facilitate the pastoral support for young people under 18. 
  • Act as a host and participate in a Q&A during undergraduate presentations. 
  • Support the gathering of feedback data to inform the success of the project. 
  • Represent The Alan Turing Institute in a professional and positive manner. 
  • Build strong relationships with all stakeholders, maintaining excellent communication to support future projects. 
  • Travel within the UK to venues hosting the summer experiences and to universities to deliver career talks 
  • Required flexibility to travel to venues in London, Manchester, Birmingham and act as a reserve
 
ABOUT YOU
  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent level of qualification   
  • Working knowledge of data science and AI related fields.   
  • Experience of working with young people or undergraduates, in an education setting or otherwise.  
  • Experience of delivering training and professional development sessions, ideally to an audience of young people/undergraduates   
  • Able to present complex information in an audience-appropriate format.  
  • Able to handle matters of a sensitive and/or confidential nature in a professional manner.            
  • Excellent organisational skills and diary management.  
  • Excellent problem solving skills.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS 
This part-time post is offered on a zero hours contract until October 2026 and requires an immediate start. Additional opportunities may arise to participate in The Turing University Career Talks. 
The hourly rate for this casual position is £22.75 and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will be expected to work up to  7.5 hours per day. 
Successful candidates may be placed on any of the above locations and dates mentioned in the advertisement. Although we will try to match you to your nearest location, slots are limited so this may not always be possible. Travel expenses will be provided.
